Telok Ayer: Singapore’s Early Communities
Begin in Telok Ayer, whose Malay name means “bay water”, a reminder that this historic street once stood much closer to Singapore’s original shoreline. Today part of Chinatown, Telok Ayer was an important arrival point for early immigrants during Singapore’s development as a trading post.
Step inside Thian Hock Keng Temple, one of Singapore’s oldest Chinese temples, built by early Chinese immigrants who came to give thanks for a safe journey across the seas. Discover its richly decorated architecture, religious traditions and craftsmanship while learning about the communities who established new lives in Singapore. Nearby, see one of Singapore’s most famous and significant street murals, depicting the diverse communities and trades once found around Telok Ayer.
Singapore River: Life in Colonial Singapore
Continue towards the Singapore River, once at the centre of Singapore’s growth as a British trading port. This is an excellent tour facilitated by a very knowledgeable guide, Rachel Chen. Rachel packs a lot of information into her little frame and explains different topics clearly backed up by pictures and photographs of both old and new Singapore. I especially liked that the tour was in that part of the city that blends the old and the new and gave me a vision of the origin of the city state and its unique and rapid progress to its current first world status. She has a good command of facts on different topics ranging from art to faith and religion, environment and the greening of the city, architecture and economics. For me this is what makes traveling so educational and interesting. On top of all these, she is also a very charming, personable and caring person.
