What Can You See on a Singapore Walking Tour?

Chinatown

As the largest historic district in Singapore, Chinatown is popular with first-time visitors and blends heritage shophouses, temples, traditional trades, street markets and some of the city’s most famous hawker centres. Beyond its colourful streets, the district tells the story of early Chinese immigrants who helped shape modern Singapore. Once a densely populated enclave organised around dialect communities, Chinatown was home to bustling five-foot ways, crowded shophouses and vibrant commercial activity. Today, private Singapore walking tours through Chinatown offer travellers a deeper understanding of Singapore’s immigrant history, multicultural heritage and remarkable urban transformation.

Kampong Glam

One of Singapore’s oldest historic districts, Kampong Glam traces its origins to the early nineteenth century when Sir Stamford Raffles designated the area for Malay, Arab, Bugis and Javanese communities. Once a thriving port town and seat of Malay royalty in Singapore, the district grew into an important centre of trade, education, publishing and cultural life for the Malay-Muslim world. Today, Kampong Glam remains a highlight of many private Singapore walking tours, offering travellers deeper insights into Singapore’s multicultural heritage, historic architecture and evolving urban landscape.

Civic District

Often described as the birthplace of modern Singapore, the Civic District traces the nation’s journey from a British colonial settlement to an independent city-state and global financial centre. Home to many of Singapore’s most significant historic landmarks, the district features grand civic buildings, national monuments and public spaces associated with the colonial era, the Japanese Occupation, self-governance and Singapore’s nation-building years. A private Singapore walking tour through the Civic District offers travellers deeper insights into the events, people and decisions that shaped modern Singapore, while showcasing some of the city’s most iconic architecture and waterfront views

Little India

Little India offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditions, religions and entrepreneurial spirit of Singapore’s Indian community. Historically associated with cattle trading and later a thriving commercial district, the neighbourhood evolved into a centre for Indian merchants, craftsmen and businesses serving a growing migrant population. Today, visitors encounter colourful Hindu temples, flower garland vendors, spice merchants, traditional textile shops and local eateries that continue to reflect the district’s strong cultural identity. A private Singapore walking tour through Little India reveals how generations of communities have helped shape Singapore’s multicultural society while preserving customs and traditions that remain visible today.

Marina Bay

Marina Bay showcases modern Singapore through its iconic skyline, waterfront promenades and world-renowned architecture. Home to many of the city’s most recognisable landmark such as Marina Bay Sands, Merlion Park, Gardens by the Bay and Esplanade- theatres on the bay, the district highlights Singapore’s transformation from a trading port into a global financial and business hub.

Katong-Joo Chiat

Katong and Joo Chiat are closely associated with Singapore’s Peranakan heritage, reflecting centuries of cultural exchange between Chinese immigrants and the Malay world. Known for their colourful conserved shophouses, heritage businesses and vibrant food culture, the neighbourhoods showcase a blend of influences that continues to shape their distinctive character today. As one of Singapore’s best-preserved heritage districts, Katong and Joo Chiat allow travellers to explore Peranakan traditions, architecture and culinary heritage while discovering how historic communities adapted alongside Singapore’s rapid urban development. A private Singapore walking tour through the area reveals a side of Singapore that differs markedly from the modern city centre.

Reviews from our Travellers

”As a very experienced world traveler, i have worked with dozens of local guides. Rachel Chen and her Culture Curious team was among the best guiding experiences I have ever had. Over three days, my family (age from 22 to 85) were informed, fed, assisted, and thrilled. Rachel and her team were informed and wise not only about landmark history, but also the intricacies of the Singapore economy and government…”

“Wonderful tour – do not hesitate to book this. We booked a four hour option. It was a great day, even with the 90 degrees F heat. My mom, who is 86, was on the tour with me. Working with Swee Lin, we modified the initial itinerary to add some breaks and some indooor walking. Swee Lin’s cultural and historical knowledge is unparalleled. We learned a lot, and ended the tour with an even greater appreciation of this unique country and its blend of cultures. We only wish she was available for another tour tomorrow!”

“Had an amazing experience on our tour with Kelvin! Multiple markets, incredible bites, and thorough cultural and historical lessons along the way! Kelvin was fun balanced with exceptional knowledge of the country, the region, the cultures, and the food! Each stall has its own history, which Kelvin always made a point to ensure we understood. We met the people behind the food and watched as Kelvin engaged with a community he’s clearly built over years of being wonderful at his work! Deeply recommend!”

“Rachel is a wonder tour guide – funny, very knowledgeable, and great for suggestions about places to go/things to do beyond the tour. We did the “First Timers” tour and loved the exploration of Singapore’s multicultural heritage as well as the amazing planning that created modern Singapore.”

Singapore has a warm tropical climate throughout the year. We recommend wearing lightweight clothing, comfortable walking shoes and bringing an umbrella or poncho in case of rain. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a refillable water bottle are also useful. Most tours visit outdoor neighbourhoods and landmarks, although shade and comfort breaks are incorporated throughout the experience.

Explore the Mysteries of Little India
Katrina, Taipei

Rachel is the best tour guide we have ever seen! She is excellent, lovely and definitely a superb storyteller and very insightful. We like and appreciate the way and attitude Rachel organized the tour with details, patience and her true passion before, during and after the tour which made our Little India time a very interesting, informative and memorable. Tasting local foods and walking through wet market were also an amazing part of the arrangements to get to know more about the culture and tradition. Highly recommend Rachel and you will always get surprise from her.

If the Best is Not Enough, Rachel Sure is!
- Christian, Austria

I hardly write a review, but when I do, then it's because the experience/service delivered was outstanding. Rachel is not just a tour guide who shows you around to places. She is a very kind and well educated person which attributes tremendously to the experience. I contacted her with my wishes and the itinerary couldn't have matched better than what I'd expected. She also has a very calm personality which helps to fully immerse in the scenery where she shows you around and the information she provides with it. Never I got the feeling it's just a run-of-the-mill and rushing to the next place. At different points throughout the tour I enjoyed to discuss with her several topics like education system in Singapore or in general social topics but also environmental ones. And for each topic she also provided knowledgeable information and integrated it seamlessly into the tour (like public subsidised housing). Rachel is really a gem and I can recommend her Private Singapore Group Walking Tour to anyone in a heartbeat.

A well-crafted tour with a refreshing perspective of Historical Singapore
- Archblood, Singapore

Tour guide Rachel has shown much zest in helping us to understand more about historical Singapore. Her energetic delivery of the past behind each place that we went — whether it’s Thian Hock Keng Temple, the Fullerton Building, or National Gallery Singapore — filled us up with little known facts that you may not find in a generalised presentation of the city-state. And she was very confident to answer our questions in respect to these things. Highly recommended if you want a refreshed perspective of familiar and lesser-known places.

A Singapore Treasure!

We took the Private Singapore Group Walking Tour and had an awesome day with Rachel! She is very knowledgeable, energetic with wonderful communication skills. The day prior to our tour she emailed me tentative schedule, confirmed our meeting place and provided suggestions for attire along with a friendly reminder for sunscreen and water. We explored parts of Chinatown, Kampong Glam, and the National Art Gallery. Rachel provided an experience that immersed us and educated us about Singapore. She is more than a tour guide, she has a true passion for her clients as she seamlessly weaves together stories of culture and history. I loved the photo binder where she could show us a visual history. Additionally, she patiently took pictures and provided great recommendations and suggestions. Culture Curious Singapore Tours with Rachel is an absolute must do on you visit to Singapore! Thanks again Rachael!

Excellent Tour!
- Christina K, USA | TripAdvisor

Our first visit to Singapore! Without Rachel’s insights and personal anecdotes it would still only be a city full of skyscrapers and tourist attractions. Instead we have learned something about the identity and feeling of Singaporeans, something which is impossible to grasp at first glance without help. We’re truly grateful for having met such a friendly, open, and thoughtful person and recommend her to anyone looking to see Singapore through local, honest eyes.

Believe the Reviews
Trotters2203, UK | TripAdvisor

My wife and I did a 4 hour tour of Singapore yesterday with Rachel. It seemed to be over in 40 minutes. Rachel is a lovely person as well as an excellent guide. She obviously knows and loves Singapore and it’s inhabitants and is keen to pass this on. Communication was excellent from first contact to agree a basic itinerary which remained flexible until the completion of the tour. We experienced a lot which would been impossible on our own with only 4 days in Singapore. We now feel as if we have made a friend and if we return to Singapore Cultural Curious SingaporeTours will be first on our to do list. If in doubt believe the reviews and book Rachel as your guide.

Highly recommend Culture Curious Singapore Tours for a Private Singapore Group Walking Tour of Singapore. Excellent communication and flexibility with the itinerary. I had the pleasure of spending a half day city tour with Rachel. During the tour we covered everything!! Visiting Chinatown, Little India and the Civic Centre. Rachel gave an in depth, interesting description of the history of Singapore. Rachels knowledge of all things Singapore was unbelievable. Visiting certain viewpoints, buildings, bridges to highlight the story of Singapore was fantastic. Full explanation of MRT system and how to get around Singapore was invaluable during my stay in Singapore. While visiting the Maxwell Food Centre to discuss food options, ordering procedures and tips including the importance of a box of tissues, Rachel noticed a short queue at a hawker stand and immediately took the opportunity to jump in line. Within 2 minutes of joining twenty other people also had. We had joined the queue for the number one rated hainanese chicken rice stand in Singapore. People can wait for an hour but Rachels local knowledge meant one of my first meals in Singapore was a highlight of the whole trip. Rachel also emailed further information and tips for my stay in Singapore.

What an Amazing Day!

Our family of 4 spent several hours with Rachel as a private shore excursion. Rachel's energy and enthusiasm is inspirational. She is so knowledgeable and accommodating and we are very grateful for her willingness to find a private driver for us. We enjoyed our day with her so much that we are returning for a longer stay in 2020. Do yourself a favor and book Rachel as your guide. She can customize any type of tour for you. She was kind and patient despite my moving at a slower pace than our younger family members.
